The 2018 Crystal + Lucy Awards®

Awards Retrospective

On Wednesday, June 13th, we celebrated the 2018 Crystal + Lucy Awards, honoring forward-thinking women of the film industry.

Producer duo NOVA Wav took the stage to accept the inaugural Artistic Excellence Award and they discussed that the rarity of a duo of female producers is an unacceptable industry norm. “Too many times we have been told we are too much or not enough.”

During her acceptance speech of the 2018 Lucy Award for Excellence in Television, Channing Dungey, President of ABC Entertainment, inspired and lit up the room with the notion that both confidence in your voice and your opinions is crucial to success. “The world is not the kindest, but I choose kindness. The world can be daunting, but I choose to be brave.”

Accepting the 2018 Crystal Award for Excellence in Film, Brie Larson praised WIF’s inclusive press line during her speech and called for gender and racial inclusivity amongst film critics in order to squash implicit biases and support films made by underrepresented groups.

“If you want to go fast, do it alone. If you want to go far, do it together.” Touching the crowd with a poignant team metaphor, celebrated actress and producer Frances McDormand honored Women In Film’s 45th anniversary with a standing ovation and stirring speech. With 20 industry advocates alongside her, she lifted up the collaborative movement for equality and expressed hope for the present and future of the industry. “I have this feeling in my gut that things are changing.”

The evening also honored Alexandra Shipp with the Women In Film Max Mara “Face of the Future” Award as well as the Women of Black Panther with the 2018 Lexus Beacon Award.
